What Are the 2017 ORYX Performance Measurement Requirements?

The Joint Commission remains closely aligned with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) program. The Joint Commission released its 2017 ORYX performance measurement requirements. Though CMS has made changes in its Hospital IQR Program for 2017, The Joint Commission has elected not to adopt all of the electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) implemented by CMS. The Joint Commission list of eCQMs includes 13 of 15 eCQMs to be implemented by CMS.

For 2017, The Joint Commission has eliminated the measure set reporting requirement—measure selection and reporting will be by individual measure. The 2017 measurement requirements are

  • hospitals will report on five required chart-abstracted measures and a choice of six of 13 available eCQMs
  • hospitals with at least 300 live births will be required to report on all of the chart-abstracted perinatal care measures
  • critical access and small hospitals (ADC≤10) will report on a choice of six available measures
  • freestanding psychiatric hospitals will report on four required hospital-based inpatient psychiatric measures
  • suspension of requirements will continue for
    • freestanding children’s hospitals
    • long-term acute care hospitals
    • inpatient rehabilitation facilities.

Measures go into effect on January 1, 2017. Additional information is available at The Joint Commission’s website under the ORYX Performance Measurement Reporting webpage, including

  • 2017 ORYX Performance Measure Reporting requirements
  • The Joint Commission measures effective January 1, 2017 (includes retired measures).
